New KWCUSA REGIONS

Map of New KWCUSA Regions

Why modify regions?

We have had many discussions with media, sponsors, and venues and everyone thought that reducing the regions to six would provide more opportunity. When you look at things like television, they want 6 to 8 week shows. This will allow each region to be covered and then the national. This also gives us the opportunity to spread the Regional competition in such a way that sponsors, judges, and KWCUSA can all attend these very important events. Another benefit is we can now go by regional names that tie to many other events and organizations. So there were lots of reasons and we actually started to do it last year. So let us know what you think.

Challenge to Oprah Show

No word from Oprah yet. We know it is busy time of year for them so we will give them a little time.
Karaoke World Championships USA has sent a challenge to the producers at the Oprah Show. Wendell Payne President of Karaoke World Championships USA says,

"We had discussed our competition and all the great things about karaoke with two producers prior to their decision to run 'Oprah's Karaoke Challenge'. We were very happy that they portrayed Karaoke in a positive way and provided the opportunity to karaoke singers. However we felt that a few weeks of qualification was not comparable to our ten months of nationwide competition. So we made the decision to challenge the Oprah Show to allow our 2010 National Champions, 1 male and 1 female to compete on her next Karaoke Challenge."

KWCUSA anxiously awaits their decision. KWCUSA is providing the opportunity for karaoke singers across the country to compete and ultimately win the chance to represent our country in world competition in September 2010. Local qualifying competitions began in October and will continue to run until May 31, 2010. State and Regional competitions will follow in June and July.

Special Thanks to our sponsors

Chartbuster Karaoke

Chartbuster Karaoke has been our biggest supporter as we grew this competition to what it is today. Each of our sponsors are important to KWCUSA, to Karaoke, and most of all to our singers. We are growing with more competions, more sponsors, and more opportunity. As we grow, there will be challenges and especially as we attempt to involve every player in the karaoke industry to provide more opportunity. So a special thank-you to Norbert and David at Chartbuster Karaoke.

We would also like to thank

The Karaoke Channel for their support since last year. We enjoy working with all the people there and as we grow KWC-Canada with MeandMic.com, I'm sure this partnership will grow.

And welcome to Sound Choice. We are still defining our relationship with a focus on supporting Kjs that use legal karaoke music.

Brian Scott 2009 National Male Champion

Brian Scott Helpful Hints for Singers

Hi everyone, it's Brian Scott... your 2009 KWCUSA National Male Champion and International Top 10 Champion. What a fantastic year I've had representing the KWCUSA organization. The experience has been so fullfilling and it has allowed me to make friends all over the world. Thank you so much to Wendell, Pam, Cindy, my wonderful home town of Ruidoso, New Mexico and all of my wonderful fans for supporting me this past year. I've made memories that will last a lifetime.

So as you all prepare for your local, state, regional or national competitions, I thought I would put together a few tips I have learned along the way to help you make the best of your performances. I look forward to seeing all the talented performers at this year's National competition in Cincinnati, Ohio.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR ALL SINGERS

LOOK THE PART- Your image on stage is vital to your performance. Your attire must always be age appropriate and relate to the genre of music you are singing. Judges are always looking to see how professional the singer looks and a great outfit will tell them you mean business. Also remember that if you are in a competition where you are required to sing more than one song, bring several outfits to change into. It will definitely leave a lasting impression on the judges.

STAGE PRESENCE-  Being comfortable on stage comes natural for some, but for others.....it's extremely difficult. That's why practice makes perfect. I recommend singing Karaoke in front of as many audience's as you can before a competition so that your presence on stage becomes more relaxed and comfortable. We all get nervous from time to time, especially during a competition, but a "great" performer can hide it. I also recommend "performance visualization". l will often visualize my performance in my mind hours before I go on. This allows me to go through every move and gesture I want to make so that by the time I am on stage it's all very familiar to me. This will help you take command of the stage. Another tip is to make contact with your audience. Many singers get "lost" in their songs and close their eyes or look down at the stage. These are both bad habits to get into. It disconnects the performer from the audience and the song looses impact. Always connect with the crowd and the judges. They will love it.

WORK THE STAGE-  There are many powerful songs that lend themselves to only a microphone and stand at center stage, however, in a competition the judges will want to see how well you work your stage. That means that at some point in your song you should reach stage left, stage right and center stage. The order is not important, but you'll want to make sure that your entire audience gets a good look at you.

SONG CHOICE-  This is crucial. Every song you choose should challenge you vocally, but must also be a song where you can hit every note perfectly. Judges ALWAYS mark down for notes that are flat or sharp. Try not to pick simple songs that have no range. More often than not, they will come across as dull or boring. Let the crowd help you. Think back to when you've performed a song that got a standing ovation or a lot of applause...that's your song!  Also, show your versatility by choosing upbeat or mid-tempo songs along with ballads to show the judges you are a well-rounded entertainer.

KNOW THE WORDS- even though you are entering a "Karaoke" competition where the words are shown on the screen, it's encouraged that you know all the words to your songs. Some judges will mark down for this. If you are not worried about looking at the screen, you can focus more on your performance. A simple way to help you memorize them is to type them out. I do this all the time and it really helps.

VOCAL CHORDS- always warm up your vocal chords before you sing. Whether it be around the house, at a club or a competition. There are many exercise you can do for your throat. My favorite is singing "Ahh" and going up and down an octave.... each time moving up a half step. There are also great hot herbal teas that you can mix with honey. You can also drink hot or room temperature water. Do not drink ice water. This will numb your vocal chords and you could possibly injure them without knowing.  Also...one that I like is potato chips. Yes, plain Lay's potato chips. The oil in the chips lubricates the chords. I try to eat them a half hour before I start my warm up. Plus...they're yummy. And lastly, try not to drink alcohol before you sing. Alcohol is a "hestomine" and dries out your throat very quickly...not to mention what it could possibly do to your performance.

HAVE FUN!!!-  There is nothing more satisfying than to perform in front a great crowd of people and hear the thunderous applause when you are finished. Every entertainer lives for that moment. The audience wants to love you. They want to travel with you on a musical journey. If you're having fun, they're having fun. Take every chance you get to connect with your audience and show them a great time.

So, hopefully you can use a few of these tips to help you in your quest of becoming our next National KWCUSA 2010 star. I wish you all the best and encourage everyone to follow their dreams and NEVER give up. You can do it!

WIth love,
Brian Scott
